Professional Profile
Thomas R. Stowell is an Advanced Degree Program Coordinator in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at The George Washington University where he manages all aspects of student services for over 400 graduate students. He is currently engaged in advanced graduate study in the area of counseling; specializing in student transition, higher education, and career counseling.
Prior to moving to Washington, D.C., Mr. Stowell worked for ten years in both public K-12 education and higher education in Vermont. From 2002 to 2007, he served as Transition and Planning Program Coordinator for the South Burlington School District; a position that was funded through a career academy grant from the Vermont Department of Education. There, he successfully developed a comprehensive classroom-based academic, career, and life transition program that served over 1000 students. He instructed courses, designed a comprehensive electronic personal learning portfolio system; and forced partnerships with local colleges, universities, businesses, and civic organizations. On several occcasions, Mr. Stowell was invited to present his work and expertise to community organizations, educational institutions, and various Vermont Government Agencies.
As a higher education professional, Mr. Stowell has held positions in admissions, residence life, student services, academic and career advising, learning center administration, and academic affairs. He has also served as an adjunct faculty member at several colleges and universities including the University of Vermont, Champlain College, and Johnson State College. Recently, he served as an invited guest lecturer at The George Washington University where he led a series of classes in the area of career counseling and development.
Mr. Stowell's research interests include academic and career transition K-20, organization and administration of university career services, and the role of career counseling throughout the lifespan. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education, a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology, and a Master of Arts degree in Education with an emphasis in curriculum and instruction; all from Johnson State College in Vermont. He will also soon be credentialed as a Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF) through the National Career Development Association.
Born and raised in Vermont, Mr. Stowell now lives in Arlington, Virginia. In addition to his work in education, Mr. Stowell enjoys nature and architecture photography. He also enjoys history, reading, architecture, and traveling.
